Austrian Open - Day 1

22nd September, 2011

Naomi Owen lost out 3-4 in the first match of the day against Kumahara of Brazil. Being 1-3 down Naomi fought back to 3-3 and 9-7 up in the 7th but the Brazilian closed the match out after Naomi having 2 match points.

Charlotte then went on against Russian Maria Dolgikh and played well but went down 0-4. Ryan Jenkins was next up and beat Belgian Vanrossomme 4-3 but was later disqualified for a piece of wood missing on the side of his racket. The Belgian was also disqualified for his rubber being too glossy (this is the first time both players have been disqualified).

With most players having some part of their rackets damaged due to clashes with the table, The ITTF would seem to be not playing fair in the treatment of all racket testing samples

Later in the day Naomi faced Lee I Chen of TPE and found it hard to stay with her class losing 0-4. Naomi had some chances in the first 2 sets but the Taiwan player upper her game in sets 3 and 4. Charlotte lost out to Hadacova 4-0 to end her women's group.

Naomi and Charlotte teamed up for the doubles match and they had 2 match points against the Polish team of Szczerkowska and Kusinska but just missed the chance to proceed.

The last match of the day saw Charlotte face a tough Czech in Kucerova in the U21 category and lost 0-3. Charlotte will play her second U21 group match tomorrow and Ryan plays Korean Lee Jung Sam (with a different bat!)
