Luxembourg Junior Open - Report

15th June, 2010

Luxembourg Junior Open

The Welsh Team consisting of 6 players and 3 coaches made the long journey to Luxembourg on Friday 11th June after stopping of in France on the Thursday night.

On Friday the preliminary stages began and the Welsh Team found it tough and didn’t really get going. On Saturday morning the players finished off their preliminary groups on a positive note after wining some good games and just losing out in some really closely fought matches. Lee, Dan, Caitlin and Nicole all won one game each out of 5 in their respective groups. Ryan failed to win a game in his group but showed some character. Charlotte found it tough in the Juniors, despite only being 14 years old, and she came very close to recording some top wins but lost out in 5 closely fought games several times which on her day could have went a different way.

In the next stage Wales started to perform better with Daniel O'Connell playing some great table tennis and winning all 4 of his final games beating Swedish, Swiss, Austrian and brushed aside Luxembourg player Diax Pol. Charlotte bounced back from her disappointing first day to win 3 games on the bounce against tough opponents from Luxembourg, Austria and Switzerland. Lee Morgan showed some great fighting spirit and played some outstanding table tennis but lost 5 matches in the 5th set. Nicole Hall at times found the going tough against top European opponents but competed and came away with some good results. Ryan and Caitlin finished off with a win and two loses in the final group stage.
