Naomi and Ryan win WOS Open titles

Naomi Owen was crowned the West of Scotland women’s winner, which was played at Holyrood sports centre on the 23rd January. Naomi managed her way through the rounds to take on Karina LeFevre in the final. The battled swayed back and forth, until Naomi stepped in up in the 7th to win the match 4-3. Meanwhile Ryan was on the adjoining table locked in a battle of his own. After beating Chinese player Wang Zheng 3-0 in the semis it looked like the title was I the bag as the result was 3-0 to Ryan the previous day. Howieson had different plans and took a 8-0 lead in the first. Ryan settled down after this and from 2-1 down in sets he took the match 4-2 to win his 6th West of Scotland crown. Ryan partnered his brother Stephen to win the doubles, beating Crawford and Howieson 3-1 in the final.
Patrick Thomas had a good run reaching the Q-Finals where he lost to the Chinese star Wang 0-3. Steve Jenkins lost at the same stage to his British League team mate Howieson 3-1. Nick Brown and Ceri James got through their respective groups to fall in round 2. Patrick reached the doubles semi final with Mike Marsden losing to the Scottish pair Howieson/Crawford. Naomi was a double winner teaming up with Ormesby’s Chloe Whyte to win the doubles event also.
Ceri lost to Sunderland’s Barrella in the last 16 of the Band 1 men’s singles and Nick Brown lost in the Q-Final of the same event to Drumchapel’s Craig Christie.
Day 2 – Cadet/Junior Singles
Four young Greenhouse players also made the trip to Glasgow with their coach Steve Jenkins and made their mark. The star of the group was Carys Webster who reached the cadet girls final losing a close 3-1. Jack Parry made it to the Q-Final stage of the cadet boys and Sadie Edwards lost out at the last 16 of the U21 singles. There were very encouraging results for all Welsh players over the weekend.
