Test Match Wales versus Scotland’s University select team
The evening before the West of Scotland Open a friendly test match was organised to pair the cream of Scotland University players and the Wales team which was competing at the tournament that weekend.
Patrick Thomas and Ryan Jenkins took care of Craig Howieson and Stewart Crawford 3-2. The highlight of that match was the 3-1 win enjoyed by Patrick over Scottish number 3, and the very experienced, Crawford. Patrick almost beat Scottish number 2 Howieson, losing a close 3-2. Ryan managed to dispose of both players 3-0. The doubles was a tight affair with the Scot’s coming out on top 3-2, but was not enough to win the overall match. Wales 3-2 Scottish Universities
The second match saw Nick Brown and Welsh number 1 Naomi Owen take on Scotland number 5 Craig Hardie and the Sri Lankan ex international Hasitha Sanarweara. Nick managed a great win over Sanarweara 3-1, 11-5 in the 4th. Naomi then helped Wales take a 2-0 lead beating Hardie with her awesome power 3-2. Nick then lost in 3 close sets in Hardie whilst Naomi again came up trumps with another win this time 3-1 against the Sri Lankan. The doubles was lost in a tight 11-9 in the 5th match but still meant Wales won overall. Wales 3-2 Scottish Universities
