Lewis wins in Newcastle
With three players competing in band 4 making it through to the next round it was always going to be hard, enjoyable work for them.
Scott Cundy going through his group in second place had to play a preliminary match but his opponent proved too strong. Matt Lancey winning his group along with his first round match only to go through to meet his fellow Welsh Team mate Lewis Williams in quarter finals.
Matt started off very strong and took the first set. Lewis changed his game round to take the next three sets.
Lewis then moved onto the semis to play Matthew Knott and proved to strong with a comfortable win of 3-1. His next challenge in the finals was Steven Fowler from Scotland. Once again Lewis dropped the first set to Steven, then picked his game up to take the next three sets. This was Lewis’ first final in a Grand Prix and had a great win over Scottish junior Steven Fowler.
In the afternoon session Patrick finished 2nd in his band 1 group only to go through and play Tom Maynard from Bristol Academy. Paddy picked his game up dramatically to beat him 3-1 in the 1st round. He then moved on to meet top seed of Band 1 Matt Ware in the semi finals. Paddy narrowly missed out taking the first set 12-10 but Ware proved too strong and took the following two sets.
Matt Lancey in his Band 5 won his group comfortably but found Everton Wilson Jnr just too strong and lost in the 5th 2-3.
Scott had a similar story in the band 3 event. With gaining qualification through his group he then moved on to face Dave Randall in the first round. This was another close encounter but again it went against the Scott and narrowly lost out in the 5th.
Lewis’ success in Band 4 followed through to the afternoon session in band 3. With a 2nd place position in his group he then moved into the preliminary round to face Mike Bradbury. This was a close fought match with lewis walking away victorious in the 5th set. Lewis brushed aside his next two oppenets beating both 3-0. In the semis he found Edward Fambley to strong and went down 0-3.
Well done all.
